KUCHING: The Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP) has been leading the efforts to boost the appreciation of language, literature, culture, and arts in Sarawak.

DBP management board member and Daro assemblyman Safiee Ahmad said that the Sarawak government has provided funds to DBP Sarawak to support various linguistic, literary, and organising events, especially as Sarawak marks its 60th year as part of Malaysia.

“One of the events included in the celebration of Sarawak’s 60th Anniversary in Malaysia is a theatre performance,” Safiee said during press conference at DBP yesterday.

The play, titled ‘Hikayat Sarawak Makmur’, produced by the DBP Sarawak, will be showcased here on October 21, and later in Johor on November 4.

“This is also supported by the state government’s policy, which is always attentive to and aware of the wealth of historical heritage, myths, and ideologies possessed by the diversity of ethnicities, whether through language, beliefs, or culture inherited from generation to generation,” he said.

He added that the play not only celebrates Sarawak’s history but also highlights the importance of arts and culture in pushing Sarawak towards a brighter future.

“We’re infusing new elements into the play, aiming to captivate our audience and drive home messages of unity, prosperity, and harmony,” he said.
