BETONG: The collapse of the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government is a valuable lesson to Sarawakians on the importance of choosing the right leaders.

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said, “A government can survive numerous challenges when experienced and good leaders are at the helm.

“When the government has such leaders, it will be unshakable. Let the current national political situation where the federal government has fallen apart due to new inexperienced leaders and the jostling for power and positions be a lesson to all of us.

“We must have strong committed leaders whose struggles are for the state and people.”

During a Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) roadshow at Rh Langan, Nanga Mara, Layar yesterday, he said Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg was a very experienced leader.

“He has been in politics for over 40 years and he is competently supported by his team of multiracial ministers who themselves are not only very experienced but hardworking as well,” he said, calling on all Sarawakians to continue to support Abang Johari’s GPS government.

Uggah further noted that this was crucial for Sarawak, which wanted its rights and wealth as enshrined in the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) agreement be protected.

He then reminded the people that each election period, they would be approached by political parties, including those from outside, who would say their candidates make good leaders.

“A strong leader alone is not enough. He must be supported by an equally strong and stable coalition or party.

“To me, there is no need to change your leaders if they can still deliver.

“People do not chop down a durian tree if it continues to produce good harvest every fruiting season,” Uggah, who is also Bukit Saban assemblyman, said.

He added that a great majority of Sarawakians had made the right choice by supporting local political parties in the last election.

“With that, Sarawak, through GPS, has remained very strong and united.

“It is able to pursue its development and finance-generating agendas and programmes very well. These are all for the people,” he said.

Betong MP Datuk Robert Lawson Chuat said Sarawak did the right thing in forming the GPS coalition.

“Through GPS, it can chart out its own development agenda without having to refer to others, in particular those from outside the state.

“In Abang Johari too, the state has a visionary leader who knows how to source for extra funds for its development,” he noted.

Dr Richard Rapu, a political secretary to the Chief Minister, was among those present at the roadshow.
