Decline in death rate due to vaccination

SIBU: From January to August 28, the Sibu district has recorded a total of 183 deaths due to Covid-19.

This was said by Sibu Divisional Disaster Management Committee (SDDMC) coordinator Dr Annuar Rapaee when providing updates on the Sibu District’s Covid-19 cases last Saturday.

He said there were 15 deaths in January, February (33), March (17), April (22), May (33), June (36), July (21) and August (six).

The Assistant Minister of Local Government and Housing said that the high death rate in February was due to the Pasai Cluster.

“The highest was in June with 36 deaths. However, the number of deaths began to decline after that as the vaccination programme was rolled out,” he said.

Dr Annuar pointed out that although this week saw an increase in cases at 665, the death toll was low at only six people as most of the cases were in Category 1 (no symptoms) and Category 2 (mild symptoms).

As for the surge of cases this week, the Assistant Minister of Education, Science and Technology Research explained that it is linked to infections in the workplace, with positive cases then infecting their family members as well.

Of the 147 cases reported in Sibu district on Saturday, he said 83 of them or 56.5 percent were Category 1.

For Category 2, he said, there were 62 cases or 42.1 percent while Category 3 and 5 recorded one case each or 0.7 percent.

No cases in Category 4 were recorded, said Dr Annuar who is also the Nangka assemblyman.
