KUCHING: The deep sea port proposed at Tanjung Po here is much needed in order to spur development in Kuching and Sarawak as a whole, says Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Jemut Masing.

“In any developed country, there is no city that can develop without a deep sea port,” he said at a press conference at his office at the Baitul Makmur building here today.

He said that Kuching did not have a deep sea port, which was why one was proposed to be implemented at Tanjung Po.

According to the Minister of Infrastructure and Ports Development, the state government had allocated RM8mil for consultants to carry out studies on the Tanjung Po deep sea port.

“By about January next year, the studies would have come up and from there we can carry on,” he said, adding that the Tanjung Po deep sea port would be a major hub.

“From these studies, we will be able to realise the scale and scope of work that we need to do.”

While he said the development of the Tanjung Po deep sea port would be quite costly, an exact figure was not available yet as the studies had not been completed.

He explained that inland ports would not be able to work the same way, and as such deep sea ports were required.
