MIRI: The vibrant colours, flavours and traditions of India took centrestage as hundreds of city residents thronged the Indoor Stadium to celebrate the Taste of Borneo Deepavali & Bollywood Nite  on Monday, here.

Hosted by the Miri Indian Association and Miri Punjabi Association, the event aimed to showcase the rich cultural tapestry of India and promote cross-cultural understanding.

Present to declare open the festivities was Mayor Adam Yii who lauded both associations for their tireless efforts in putting the celebration together.

 “It’s also heartening and commendable to see the efforts of the Miri Indian and Punjabi Associations in preserving and promoting Indian culture here, acting as a bridge of their culture to connect to us all,” he addedt.

He said the event demonstrated the spiritual and the spectacular, the traditional and the modern. 

“The ideals and values of Diwali are precisely what the Taste of Borneo Carnival embodies with its slogan, Unity in Diversity,” Yii said.

 Also present were Presiding Officer of Taste of Borneo Carnival 2023, cum President of Sarawak Chinese Association Ting Pang Soon; the Main Committee Organising Chairperson for Taste Of Borneo Carnival 2.0 Leong Soon Kian;  Joint Organising Chairpersons for Taste of Borneo Deepavali & Bollywood Nite Sivarajah and Parveen Kaur; President of Miri Indian Association Karambir Singh; and Vice President of Miri Punjabi Association Sardar Laban Singh.
