Defending champion likely to retain title

KUCHING:  The grand finals of this year’s Damai Champion of Champion (CoC) Golf Tournament will be held at Damai Golf and Country Club (DGCC) this weekend where all of the winners of the club’s KKB Monthly Escalation Medal (MEM) tournaments are in the fray for top honour.

Defending champion, Daniel Yeo is among the hot favourite for the two-day event which will tee-off on shotgun basis and the overall champion will be decided on stroke play over aggregate score after 36 hole game.

According to DGCC’s general manager, Roslan Mohd Salleh the competition is expected to be stiff among club members and non-members who are vying for the bragging rights of becoming the champion of champions.

“Response towards our in-house event is encouraging because all of the participants those who had performed well in the respective monthly editions held starting early this year and the grand finals will determine the overall champion for the year 2018,” he said.

“There are also newcomers who are competing together with the regular contenders and they are expected to give a strong challenge to the tournament favourites,” Roslan enthused.   

He added that despite the present wet weather, the golf course at DGCC is still playable and there are still upcoming events which will be held at until the end of the year.

The club has recently hosted the golf tournament which was held in conjunction with the national level Ministry of Education’s Sports and Arts Festival 2018 where over 100 participants from throughout the country took part in the three-day event.

Perak which was represented by Mohd Kamrul Hisham, Zulkiflee Rasdi, Mohd Rozaidi Said and Rosli Hashim emerged overall champion in the Inter-team Nett category. Terengganu finished second placing after their players, Isa Omar. Rosdee Ali, Hasmasuhaimi Sulaiman and Asmadi Abdullah carded a total score of 212 while Sabah which was represented by Harris Sumbin, Sofian Jainani, Muhammad Larasi and John Ali Julhari came in third placing with five strokes adrift.

Sabah however finished first placing in the Inter-Team Gross category after its players, Roslan Adam, Jakrin Basiran, Seminar Sunairi and Rahisin Narion carded a total score of 203 strokes while Terengganu which was represented by Ahmad Shahrul Nizam, MD Ali Hanafiah, Hasrie Ismail and Abdul Halim Hasan finished second placing with 212 strokes. The third placing went to Negeri Sembilan which was represented by Abdul Razak Hamzah, Noor Azizi Idris, Ahmad Fauzi Jaafar and Mohd Nasir Abdul Aziz

Roslan Adam from Sabah emerged overall champion in the Individual Gross category after he carded 155 strokes while his team mate, Jakrin Basiran finished second with five strokes adrift and Suresh Rao Appanah from Kedah came in third placing with 161 strokes.

In the Individual Nett category, Zulkiflee Rasdi from Perak who played with handicap 14 finished first placing with 137 strokes while Hasmasuhaimai Sulaiman from Terengganu who played with handicap 16 came in second and Harris Sumbin from Sabah who played with handicap 14 finished third placing.
