Delay school reopening

KUCHING: The Sarawak Dayak National Union (SDNU) has suggested that school sessions in Covid-19 red zones should only commence once the pandemic is contained to avoid students, teachers and school staff contracting the disease.

SDNU Sibu Branch has appealed to the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SMDC) and State Education Department to reconsider opening schools in the district on January 20.

SDNU Sibu suggested that the Divisional Education Office in Sibu and its district education offices in Kanowit and Selangau consult the National Security Council (MKN) and the Ministry of Health (MoH) on a new date for school sessions in the affected districts.

It also suggested that priority be given to students sitting for public examinations. Other students could attend classes conducted through digital and online learning, said Chambai, a practising solicitor and advocate.

He noted worries among parents that some school teachers and staff were among the positive Covid-19 cases in the districts.

He said parents were also worried of students not complying with standard operating procedures (SOPs), as well as social distancing in schools.
