Chinese New Year is approaching, and everyone wants to get their hands on mouth-watering delicacies before they run out. Celebrate the auspicious Lunar New Year with our selection of snacks and snack gift boxes.

CNY goodies to snack on

The Chinese New Year (CNY) celebration, which falls on January 22 this year, is less than two weeks away.

Bakers and home-based sellers alike have been busy taking orders over the past few weeks, as customers are eager to get their hands on the goodies before they sell out.

The typical snacks served during the festivities include pineapple tarts, peanut cookies, and nian gao (sticky rice cake).

In search of new snack flavours, New Sarawak Tribune compiled a list of goodies available from our local bakers.

Oolong pineapple cake from Glyka Delights

The pineapple cake gift box has long been a popular Chinese New Year gift, and this year, Glyka Delights is introducing oolong pineapple cake as a new flavour to go with the original.

Shortbread is also available in three varieties — classic, coffee, and Earl Grey.

Crisp and buttery, the shortbread melts in your mouth, and it has been one of Glyka Delight’s most popular gift items even during the non-holiday season.

Cookie jars are RM30, shortbread is RM32, and pineapple cakes are RM52.

Snowy houjicha cookie from Creamnbutter_

In addition to the traditional pineapple tart, Creamnbutter_ is introducing three new flavours for customers to try — houjicha snowball, rainsinmilk cookie, and sunflower seed parmesan cookie.

Unlike the traditional “momo” cookie, the houjicha flavour from Creamnbutter_ has a crunchy texture and a slight almond flavour.

For chocolate lovers, try the bittersweet and cacao-rich double chocolate walnut cookie.

This year’s top sellers, according to Creamnbutter_, are sunflower seed parmesan cookies, double chocolate walnut cookies, and the original pineapple tarts.

Prices start at RM35 for a bottle and RM68 for a CNY gift box with two flavours to choose from.

B-Mom Mam is a humble home-based business that started in 2019 with the intention of sharing good home-cooked food with more people.

Nora Ong’s passion for cooking has kept her hands busy with signature delicacies such as kacangma, acar, and kuih salat, which sell out within hours of being posted on its social media page.

In 2020, Andrea Ong, joined her mother, thus the rebranding to B-Mom Mam.

Andrea’s specialties include curating light, flavourful pastries and creating eye-catching packaging. Her signature item is the one bite size mooncake, which has been well-received.

For the past few years, B-Mom Mam’s signature acar and addictive crunchy seaweed crackers have been the main star items and remain the most popular snacks of all time.

This CNY, they’ve created a special B-Mom Mam 2023 Heng Ong Huat cookies set with six different flavours to choose from, including German cookies, cranberry earl grey, orange chocolate, and special flavours like dark chocolate butterscotch, cheese straw, and lemon yuzu.

Cookies will be packed into a Heng set (1 bottle), an Ong set (2 bottles), or a Huat set (3 bottles).

However, due to the overwhelming response, they have now closed all orders for CNY. However, don’t worry; they will still be taking pre-orders after the festivities for their signature acar, seaweed crackers, and its weekly menu of kacangma/kuih salat/Nyonya chap chye/sambal udang belimbing and more.
