DALAT: The people here are generally optimistic about the New Year. As such they are hopeful and expectant that 2021 would see the implementation of some more projects that have been proposed for this district.

They are hopeful partly because this year also marks the beginning of the 12th five-year Malaysia Plan (RMK12:2021-2025).

It is also because the local representative cum state lawmaker, Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah, has proved to be fully committed to assisting her constituents to get development projects approved by the state government.

Fatimah, who is also Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Minister, in turn has assured the people that their wishes would be fulfilled as long as they help put the present government back to power in the coming state election.

When he officiated at the opening ceremony of Dalat Waterfront and BazaarNita Fatima Dalat last Dec 19, Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg announced that the development projects requested by Fatimah for her constituency would be included in the 12th Malaysia Plan. That was music to the ears of the locals and they responded with a loud applause.

The five projects are the proposed six-kilometre-long Kampung Kekan-Kampung Medong Sebarang road (costing RM50 million); new Dalat Mosque (RM12 million); a hotel (Dalat Boutique Hotel) to replace the old government rest house; a centralised Sago Waste Collection and Treatment Plant; and Sarawak Sago Industry Development Board complex (RM27 million).

The chief minister also immediately approved four of the nine projects requested by Fatimah.

The four projects are the upgrading (installing additional roofing) of Dalat Waterfront phase 2 estimated at RM1.9 million; Dalat Waterfront phase 3 (about RM5 million); van jenazah for Dalat Hospital; and annual grant for operating expenditure (about RM240,000) for Galeri Muzium Warisan Melanau in Oya.

It was no wonder that the people thanked Fatimah and the state government for the completed phase 2 of Dalat Waterfront project. They are clearly happy with what the new public facility could offer.

Here are the comments a few of them made about the new waterfront.

The waterfront is a pride for us. Dalat assemblywoman Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah works hard to make it a reality.

Finally we have a good place for to do group ‘zumba’ exercise, general recreation and family retreat.

This is an exciting moment for all of us in Dalat. It is an important achievement because it shows mutual appreciation.

It’s good for retreat and for family recreation — bigger space to host the biennial regatta and ‘balau’ carnival.

I think it’s a suitable place to hold big events such as the annual regatta. A good place for recreation too.

It adds beauty to Dalat bazaar and the riverbank — a good place for relaxing and organising big events.
