KUCHING: The perception of supposed discrimination against non-Bumiputera police personnel needs to be eradicated in order to encourage greater participation in the police force, said Sarawak Community Policing Association (SCPA) secretary David Xavier Hii Chin Loung.

“There is a perception that Chinese and other non-Bumiputera applicants may face some form of discrimination when applying for the position, and that it may even occur during their training and evaluation.

“There are also concerns regarding the prospects of promotion,” he said when contacted by New Sarawak Tribune today (Mar 16).

He said this perception could be cleared by creating awareness among the society through road shows or exhibitions.

“As long as they are given assurance and confidence that no such discrimination will occur, I believe this will increase the participation of Chinese and/or non-Bumiputera applicants,” said Hii.

Earlier, during an interview with Bernama on Monday, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador said the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) had been experiencing difficulty in recruiting non-bumiputeras since 2010.

He said the recruitment of more non-Bumiputeras and Orang Asli into the police force was vital with regard to resolving communication issues when handling cases.

He said that of the total number of 123,000 officers and personnel nationwide, Chinese made up 1.9 percent and Indians three percent, while the number of Orang Asli recruitment had diminished.
