KUCHING: The Sarawak Museum Department has been instructed to conduct further studies on two big metal objects (they look like tanks) recently found at Lutong Beach in Miri.

Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the experts will verify on what are those pieces.

“We will get the Museum Department to look into it and we will wait for them to give us the answers,” he said in a press conference on the New Year Countdown at the Indoor Stadium, Petra Jaya on Tuesday (Dec 29).

He said at first glance he could tell what those items were, but to him it looks like a base for big guns (weapons) as probably the area might be a landing point during the Second World War.

“Or it can be a structure mainly for oil and gas, or there might have been a ship that got stuck down in the sand. I can only speculate until the experts are able to verify what it is,” he said.

Meanwhile, Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Sebastian Ting had also gone to the site to have a look after being informed on the metal pieces.

“I have met the person, John Hill who discovered it and he has retired from the oil and gas sector. He had first come to Miri in 1981 and had shared about his research,” he said in a Facebook post on Monday (Dec 28).

He hoped that with such a new discovery from the sea of Miri after so much erosion will add more history to Miri division.

“We also hope the relevant agencies will act fast on the seriousness of erosion happening at the beach,” he said.

Ting also advised the public who are visiting the beach area to be extra careful as the metal pieces are quite sharp and rusty.
