KUCHING: Six hundred and forty-six sets of personal protection equipment (PPE) have been sewn by members of the State Women and Family Department’s sewing class for medical frontliners combating Covid-19.

Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah said the completed PPE consisted of isolation gowns, hoods and boot covers, which would be handed over to the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) and later distributed to Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) frontliners.

“This PPE sewing project is initiated by the Women and Family Department and it took about 10 members, including nine teachers, nine days to complete,” she said at a press conference at Wisma Bapa Malaysia here yesterday.

She said the project was also collaboration with Anna Sue Couture Sdn Bhd and Sarawak fashion designer Ben Nazry.

“As mentioned by SGH director Dr Ngian Hie Ung, SGH needs about 1,400 of gowns per day. More of this PPE is needed as it can only be used once,” she said.

Fatimah called for more donations of PPE for the medical frontliners.

“We want our medical workers to be physically safe, therefore this PPE contribution is very important as our support to them so that they can carry out their duties without worrying about their safety,” she said.

Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, who was present to receive the PPE, expressed his gratitude to Fatimah and her team for helping the frontliners.

He also conveyed his appreciation to Longi Company for donating PPE, ACEC Association for donating N95 face masks and an individual for donating disinfectant.

“We are indeed very fortunate because a lot of non-governmental organisations, individuals, business and corporate donate PPE to the frontliners.

“The front-liners are our heroes and they are facing a very challenging life. The least we can do is to provide   assistance such as the PPE,” said Uggah.
