SIBU: The Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) is proposing a designated location for buskers to play music in public.

According to its chairman Clarence Ting Ing Horh, Sibu has numerous young talents but it is hard for them to showcase their abilities due to lack of places to perform as well as support.

“There are so many talents ever since I have been (SMC) chairman and since we open up (after the COVID-19 pandemic). I met so many buskers.

Ting delivering his speech.

“Hence, I told the council (SMC), please go and identified few places. Let them (buskers) sing don’t stop them,” he said in his speech when officiating at the Borneo Ethnic Music Exchange Conference (BEMEC) here today.

Ting noted that the buskers are usually not doing it purely because of money but because of their love for music.

“Let them make their money. I’m sure the money is not worth it. They are there (busking) because of the music. I am sure they are not begging but only making good music. They make people feel good.

“So, what we (SMC) are going to do is, instead of having live music all over the place where the police will be having problems with as well as complaints from residents because (they are busking) too near to the housing areas, we are going to mark just a few places for them.

“It could be at the waterfront (Dataran Tun Tuanku Bujang Phase II area), or the old town (Sungai Merah area). If you want to open up live music there, we are going to give it to you. That is what we are proposing,” he stressed.
