KUCHING: The Youth Entrepreneur Development Programme (EDP) organised by the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development aims at promoting entrepreneurship among youth in Sarawak.

Deputy Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneurship Development Dr Ripin Lamat said the initiative is in keeping with the ministry’s strategic planning to develop youth into entrepreneurs.

“In line with this, we have spoken to a number of Public Higher Education Institutions (IPTA), Private Higher Education Institutions (IPTS), and a number of other organisations, including the Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC).

“The purpose of the discussion is to obtain information from each IPTA or agency’s entrepreneur development programme so that we can work together for the benefit of the youth,” he said after the EDP Round Table Discussion with the agencies involved.

He said that 14 agencies and IPTAs including the Institut Kemahiran Malaysia (IKM), Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UiTM), Polytechnic, Centex and community colleges participated in the discussion session.

He pointed out that the activities and programmes were held to ensure that the youth received the essential skills and support while also creating prospects for business development.

“In addition, it can also produce and empower competent and competitive youth entrepreneurs in the local and international markets.

“In fact, it can strengthen the support system and network that can propel youth entrepreneurs towards success in the business they venture into,” he said.

Ripin noted that the ‘Youth Entrepreneur Setup (YES) programme had received favourable response from the youth.

A total of 1,888 youths have participated in the programme held throughout Sarawak.
