KUCHING: The people of Sarawak can see for themselves the amount of development brought about by the ruling state government, said Petra Jaya MP Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof.

He was alluding to some claims pertaining to the state government’s alleged inability to provide any change to Sarawak after being in power for the past 56 years.

According to Fadillah, the people could see and judge for themselves whether or not the claims were true.

“This also includes the person who made these claims as he would also be held responsible if there is a lack of development in the state because he once held a position in the state’s Cabinet as well,” he said.

He said this when met by reporters after visiting a burnt house victim at Jalan Layang-Layang, Lorong Cenderawasih, Kampung Semerah Padi, here yesterday.

Fadillah, who is also the Federal Works Minister, noted that when looking at the situation in terms of infrastructural development, it could be seen that little by little changes were being made to the basic facilities.

“Those who claim that there were no changes, it’s either the person is not looking with their eyes or they are heartless.

“For example, our roads used to be much smaller than they are now. We were driving on dirt roads previously and now the roads are much better.

“The number of people who are without fresh water supply or electricity is getting fewer, which means that there are developments,” he said.

He also acknowledged that bringing in development was not an easy task that could be accomplished quickly.

“Sarawak is big and our allocations are limited. But little by little, we can see that there are changes and this is our commitment.

“We will continue to give all the facilities needed by the people. What’s more important is that there should not be too much politicking and to only give our best to the people.

“If they say that they can provide better than what GPS (Gabungan Parti Sarawak) can give, then they should give to the people more than GPS.”

Asked to comment on the six participating parties to run for the Petra Jaya seat in Parliament, Fadillah said he welcomed those who wished to compete against him in the name of democracy.

“What’s important is that we let the people choose for themselves and in GPS, we provide our services not because of the elections, but we are holding on to our commitments and vows for the people.

“This is why we strive to give our best to the people and Sarawak,” he said.
