SIBU: Pakatan Harapan (PH) Government hopes to improve the road connectivity system in Sarawak, says Works Minister Baru Bian. “Development plans will continue to be intensified,” he gave the assurance while officiating at the Selangau District Level Teachers’ Day celebration at a leading hotel here on Saturday night.

“I believe the PH Government under the leadership of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohammad will succeed in overcoming the problems left by the previous BN government. “PH strongly emphasises a holistic approach. The projects to be implemented will be through transparent management and done through open tender,” he said, adding that the government will also carry out a comprehensive reform, to be done in stages.

Meanwhile, Baru also touched on his role as the Works Minister of Malaysia. “As a Sarawakian, this explanation is very important so that the people can understand my duties and responsibilities in the Ministry of Works.

“My position as the Works Minister has added my knowledge directly to the development of the country, including Sarawak, especially involving roads and buildings.” “There are federal roads, there are state roads and there are also roads under the supervision of local councils. In addition there are also village roads built by the Ministry of Rural Development.

“There are buildings owned by the federal government and there are also state-owned buildings,” he explained, adding that there is a slight difference in the roles of the agencies concerned. Baru continued: “But the goal is same, to develop facilities for the well-being of the people.

My jurisdiction as the Minister of Works is responsible for federal roads, highways, roads to the airport and streets within public institutions of higher learning and federal buildings. “In Sarawak, we have roads that are still far behind. Pan Borneo Highway which was planned by the previous government will continue and we will closely monitor it.

“As a Sarawakian, I will make sure the roads are built perfectly. I have also planned to monitor the progress of the highway myself. “In the first phase, I will go to the ground with my team from the Ministry, starting from Telok Melano to Miri. The second phase will be from Limbang to Sabah. We will set the date and time.” On the Selangau District Level Teacher’s Day celebration, he said he was informed there are 22 primary schools and a secondary school in the district.

“There are 356 teachers serving in this area and I am sure May 16 is very special for them. Teachers’ Day is funded every year to remember and to express our gratitude to the teachers who have served the country,” he said. During the function, 56 teachers from the district who excelled in co-curriculum and sports received certificates of recognition.
