Diabetes camp in Sibu Nov 12-13

SIBU: Diabetes Malaysia Sibu District Branch (DMSDB) in collaboration with SEGi University, will hold a two-day diabetes camp Sibu 2022 at Pulau Li Hua Hotel here, commencing November 12 at 8am.

According to the organising committee chairman, Prof. Dr Mohd Raili Suhaili of SEGi University, the camp, themed, ‘Diabetes education makes a difference’ have so far registered 165 participants consisting of doctors, nurses, type2 adult diabetes patients and their caretakers.

“The objectives of this camp are to update knowledge and improve diabetes management skills among healthcare professionals, to encourage self-care among diabetes mellitus and their caretakers, and to improve the quality of care given by caretakers.

“Besides, it is also to promote the peer support approach and to encourage the formation of the Diabetes Support Group, as well as to foster goodwill between healthcare professionals and their caretakers.” he told a press conference at RH hotel here today.

Also in attendance was chairman of DMSDB Tiong Kiong King.

Dr Raili said the participants are expected to be ‘camping’ at the hotel provided so that they need not worry about rushing home and back till the end of the programme.

He pointed out that the programme is designed in such a way that there are sufficient opportunities for diabetes patients and their caretakers to mingle and possibly network with healthcare professionals and care providers.

“In this camp, two main programme will run concurrently, namely, ‘Short Course and Update on Diabetes’ for healthcare professionals, and diabetes education programme for diabetes patients and caretakers.

“Sufficient time will be set aside for recreational and social activities,” Dr Raili said, adding there will be also free health screening for the public from 10am to 2pm during the two-day camp.

Among the topics to be presented by various healthcare professionals during the camp are diabetic drug counselling; optimising control in diabetic eye diseases; optimising control in diabetic nephropathy; practical approach to diabetic neuropathy; opitimising cardiovascular disease in diabetic patients; diabetic mellitus care in pregnancy; diabetic foot care; and optimising care in elderly diabetic patients.
