KUCHING: The Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) has been requested to solve the flash flood predicament faced by residents of the Stampin Resettlement Scheme and Taman Happy Valley.

Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap disclosed that a courtesy call was made to DID director Ahmad Denny on Wednesday (March 9), adding that he was accompanied by Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman Lo Khere Chiang together with community leaders.

“The residents from Stampin Resettlement Scheme and Taman Happy Valley have been complaining that flash floods occur every time there is a heavy downpour and the problem has got worse lately.

“The dilapidated and poor drainage has caused excess rainwater to get into their car porch and in some houses into their living room which have greatly inconvenienced the residents.

“The residents informed that they have constantly reported this flash flooding issue to the authorities concerned, but the problems remains unresolved despite their complaints,” he said in a statement today.

As a long-term solution, Yap requested the DID to pay close attention and speedily complete a study and formulate a comprehensive drainage system for the Stampin Resettlement Scheme, Taman Happy Valley and its surrounding areas.

He hoped that with proper studying, planning and costing, the DID can solve the flash flood problem by securing the development funds or prioritise and allocate the usage of yearly development funding from the government for the implementation of upgrading works of all existing drains.

“This is to keep up with the needs of the residential development for Stampin Resettlement Scheme, Taman Happy Valley and its surrounding areas,” he said.

Yap assured that as an interim measure, he will continue to monitor the situation to ensure all necessary periodic maintenance is carried out properly by the relevant authorities to mitigate the flash flood problem in the areas.

“I am committed and will continue to serve as the eyes and ears of our local community. I shall continue to provide feedback from the ground and try to resolve issues or problems of public interest affecting the communities residing in my constituency,” he added.
