THE Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) is urged to speed up the construction of the channel diversion project in Kabong constituency.

Kabong assemblyman Mohammad Chee Kadir said that the project was announced by the Premier some time ago to address the severe erosion issue along the banks of Sungai Seblak from Sungai Benang to Empayang.

However, he added that after quite a long time, the project had not been implemented by the DID.

“We hope that DID can speed up this project to avoid damages in the stated areas.

“If immediate action is not taken, then the folk’s crops will be destroyed due to the ingress of salt water into their gardens.

“I plead on behalf of the people who are fully dependent on the crops in their gardens for the responsible agencies to see the seriousness of this matter because it involves the livelihoods of farmers along the banks of Sungai Seblak from Sungai Benang to Empayang.

“In addition, without it, two longhouses, namely, Rumah Chuat and Rumah Bujang will be flooded every time there is a high tide,” he said.

Mohammad Chee said this when debating on the motion of appreciation for the head of state’s address on the fifth day of the 19th State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting today (May 19).

Meanwhile, touching on the projects in his constituency, he pointed out that some of the approved projects had not started yet.

Among them are Kabong District Mosque, Kabong Community Hall, Kabong District Office Building, Kpg Muroh Surau, Muroh Sports Center, Kabong Entrepreneurs Pavilion, Rumah Bundan Boat Terminal, and Kampung Emplam Boat Terminal.

“Moreover, the Kabong New Town project which was launched by the Premier in 2021 has also been delayed.

“The earthworks sand filling project is now categorised as a sick project.

“With that, I ask the agencies involved to act decisively so that the contractor can complete the work within the stipulated time,” he said.
