KUCHING: Two siblings with disabilities (OKU) had to hurrily drag their whole bodies to reach their wheelchairs in order to save themselves after their house was flooded in Taman Malihah here last Wednesday (Jan 13).

Irwandi Mazlan, 40, said he was sleeping at the time of the incident when he heard his 94-year-old mother yelling for him and his older brother, Rusaidi Mazlan, 50. Both of them are wheelchair users.

“When I woke up because of my mother’s calling, the water has already started filling in the whole house at around 2am.

“It was very hard for the three of us because we cannot move so much like normal people.

“Thankfully my sister arrived on time to mobilise us and brought us to the evacuation centre (PPS),” he told New Sarawak Tribune when met at the PPS at SJK (C) Chung Hua Sungai Tengah in Jalan Sejijak here on Friday (Jan 15).

He also mentioned that his sister managed to take the important documents to safety during the flood.

He added that the water level has reached about one metre high during the incident.

“I had already cleaned the house prior to the incident because we were well aware of the floods,” he added.

Their mother was brought to stay at his sister’s home while Irwandi and his brother were sent to PPS Taman Malihah before re-evacuation to the current PPS after the first centre was also flooded on Thursday (Jan 14).
