BAKO: The discussions on bridge construction projects that the federal government should  fund in Sarawak are still going on.

This was revealed by Assistant Minister for Coastal Road Datuk Julaihi Narawi when met by reporters during a visit to the Sungai Bako Bridge project in Kampung Bako yesterday.

According to Julaihi, there are three bridge projects in Sarawak that were previously agreed by the Federal Government namely the Batang Lupar Bridge (sharing cost of 50/50), Rambungan Bridge and Igan Bridge.

“The state government through our ministry has held discussions with the federal government on these bridge construction projects especially  on the Batang Lupar Bridge,” he said.

Julaihi, however, did not disclose any further about the progress of the discussion but instead told the discussion that it was still going on.

“We hope the federal government will continue the construction of the Batang Lupar Bridge project based on cost sharing funds. The bridge is 11 km long,” he said.

Julaihi explained that the state government already has a Batang Lupar Bridge design, especially since the bridge is most strategically located on the coastal road route in Sarawak besides Igan Bridge and Rambungan Bridge.

“These are among the bridges that must be built on the coastal road route and we find that the coastal road route has become a priority and an alternative road to the state road users.

“The frequency of users in the Sebuyau / Triso ferry is now over 20,000 vehicles per month and this represents the high usage of ferry services,” he said.

In line with that, Julaihi said the use of coastal road routes is expected to increase in the future.

Earlier, Julaihi and Demak Laut Assemblyman, Dr. Hazland Hipni with ministry and the Public Works Department (JKR) officials attended a briefing on the latest development of the Sungai Bako Bridge project, and was brought to visit the project site.
