KUCHING: The state government and the Senior Customs Officer Association Malaysia (Perkasa) Sarawak branch have been encouraged to continue their joint efforts to hold more corporate social responsibility (CSR) programmes more often.

This encouragement came from Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg during a CSR and breaking of fast programme at Dormani Hotel in Jalan Datuk Ajibah Abol here, yesterday.

“On behalf of the Satok community, I express my appreciation to Perkasa for coming here to carry out their ‘ibadah’ (Islamic practices) this Ramadan,” he said.

Abang Johari also revealed that Perkasa had been to four other locations to provide assistance to the needy.

“Muslims do this to obtain reward. Thus, we should practise a lot of charity as encouraged in Islam,” he said.

On “zakat” (annual tax on Muslims), Abang Johari reminded the community that it is compulsory for all Muslims.

He said that among their assets, some are meant for charity. Thus, he urged elected representatives to cooperate with Perkasa to not only hold such programme during Ramadan but also in other months.

On the Customs Department, Abang Johari acknowledged their hard work of increasing state’s import and export revenue.

“Since our import has increased, export has increased, eventually their work at Customs also increased. In a way, it shows that they also played a part in developing the state,” he said.

About 70 orphans in Satok constituency were given money and Raya biscuits by Abang Johari.

Also present were Abang Johari’s wife Datuk Amar Juma’ani Tuanku Bujang, Sarawak Customs director Datuk Sharifah Halimah Tuanku Taha, Perkasa president Abang Zamri Abang Nazarin and Tupong assemblyman Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman.
