KUCHING: Politics should not be used to provoke the people’s inherent positive values, says Member of Parliament for Batang Sadong Datuk Seri Nancy Shukry.

Pointing out that the level of tolerance among Sarawakians towards each other is very high, Nancy said politically it is becoming very challenging as some quarters are using race and religion to challenge the level of patience among Sarawakians.

Hence, she said that was why “Sarawak First” has become the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) slogan.

“We love our peace and harmony to stay on. Politics should not be used to provoke the people’s inherent positive values.”

Nancy said the state government has invested so much through its economic and social policies to ensure all levels of the rakyat are taken care of.

“Our social values have become the envy of many from outside Sarawak. This, we must keep as our strength and our pride.

“Together we make Sarawak a better place to live,” he stressed in her Hari Raya Aidilfitri message to The New Sarawak Tribune.

“Take this joyous occasion (Gawai Dayak and Hari Raya Aidilfitri) as an opportunity to make more friends and to learn more from each other, and accept people for who they are by visiting each other from the different races and beliefs.”

Nancy regarded this year as a very exciting year for Sarawak, where both the Gawai Dayak and the Hari Raya are celebrated within the same week.

“It is indeed a rare occasion. The last time we experienced similar occasion within the same week was in 1987,” she said, adding that the Gawai Dayak celebration by itself is a very unique event and by combining both Gawai Dayak and the Hari Raya Aidilfitri, the occasion becomes more special and more unique as it is a very rare occasion to have the two festivals occurring within the same week.

Gawai Raya, she said is also an opportunity for all Sarawakians who live and work outside Sarawak to come home and celebrate with their families, especially those families who come from mixed marriages.

“The beauty of this occasion is greatly felt in view of the different culture and tradition being introduced through the marriages of different ethnic and religion,” she said.

Nancy observed that the Gawai celebration kicked off in different ways in different areas.

“I just experienced celebrating with my constituents. After my “tarawih” prayers, I took the opportunity to visit my Dayak constituents. We walked within the longhouse and shook hands with the families living in the longhouse.

“We had cordial drinks and sang songs followed by dances. Such activities have been practised among the Dayaks for a long time already.

“We really value this peaceful and joyful event,” she said adding that these are values which are sacrosanct and need to be upheld in order to ensure continuous harmony and unity among Sarawakians.

Meanwhile Member of Parliament for Batang Lupar, Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim in wishing all Muslims Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri, hoped the occasion brings happiness and closer relationship among family members.

“As a people’s representative, I really hope that our people will continue to be united in any situations.

“As a Sarawakian especially, we have to be stronger to face any challenges and propaganda that may harm our beloved state.

“We should stay behind our Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg and show our tremendous support towards his leadership,” she added.
