KUCHING: The donations by state government leaders to the State Disaster Fund through a pay cut in their salaries are to help the people.
Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) information chief Datuk Idris Buang said the step taken by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg and Cabinet Minister reflected their concern for the masses.
“This is a good move and is reflective of the concern by the chief minister and the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government leaders.
“We welcome this as the funds are channelled to the State Disaster Fund to help the people,” he said in a livestream on Friday (June 4).
Earlier on Friday, the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) in a statement said all Sarawak Cabinet members would contribute two months of their salaries to the state Disaster Fund while GPS assemblymen and political secretaries would do the same with their allowances.
Their contributions would be in the form of salary deductions effective from this month until each leader had contributed the equivalent of two months’ salary or allowance.
According to the statement, the chief minister will have his pay reduced by 30%, the deputy chief minister 25%, ministers and state legislative assembly speaker 20%, assistant ministers 15%, state assemblymen 10% and political secretaries 5%.
Meanwhile, on the imposition of an enhanced movement control order (EMCO) at Kampung Empila in Samarahan, Idris said food aid would be distributed by the Community Welfare Department.
“For myself as the assemblyman and the Kota Samarahan MP Rubiah Wang, we will be distributing wet food.
“This has to be distributed quickly. We will do so with the help of agencies on the ground. This will be done in one or two days’ time and in stages,” he said.
At the same time, Idris urged the villagers to cooperate with the authorities and to undergo swab tests when required.
