KUCHING: Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang urged the public to not be swayed by fake news shared by irresponsible parties seeking to create controversy.

“We should be positive about the government’s efforts at the state and federal levels to control the spread of Covid-19,” he said.

He said this while officiating at the ‘Merdeka@Komuniti Kuching 2020’ programme at Kampung Lidah Tanah community hall Sunday.

Lo added that it is the responsibility of the people to ensure that the standard operating procedure (SOP) set by the government is followed to help break the chain of the pandemic.

“Malaysians should cooperate with the government in its efforts to help fight the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Let us not be selfish, we need to take care of our own health by practising the new norm such as wearing face masks, washing our hands constantly or using hand sanitisers, and maintaining social distancing to help prevent the spread of the disease.

“We are required to always stand together to maintain unity within the country through toleration and cooperation with one another, especially during times like this,” he said.

Meanwhile, he also urged Malaysians to instil the spirit of patriotism and to always practise the principles of the Rukun Negara.

“Patriotism should start from the heart. The feeling of love for the country must exist with confidence and sincerity.

“In terms of appearance, we need to praise the emblem of our country, the Jalur Gemilang, by waving it with pride,” he said.

Also present were Sarawak Information Department (JaPen) deputy director Aziz Abdul Rahman and Kampung Lidah Tanah village chief Hamzah Bujang.
