KUCHING: It is political suicide to call for the state election at a time when Covid-19 cases are increasing, said president of Parti Bumi Kenyalang (PBK) Voon Lee Shan.

He pointed out that all opposition parties had been gearing up for the election for many months now.

“If the state election is held during the Covid-19 pandemic, this will be a good campaign weapon for non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and the opposition to hit GPS.

“With Covid-19 cases rising, people are scared to come out to vote and Sarawakians who cannot come back to vote will be very angry and frustrated.

“They will feel their right to vote is denied and undemocratic and they will resort to the social media to vent their anger,” he said in a statement on Monday (Oct 5).

Voon said the state leaders must learn from what had happened in Sabah after its state election.

“The call by Tan Sri Musa Aman not to hold the election during Covid-19 worked against Warisan Plus when Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal proceeded with it.”
