KUCHING: More special programmes and projects are needed to eradicate poverty. Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud said the poor must not be forgotten in Sarawak’s efforts to upgrade its socio-economic status.

“The poor needs to be supported through skills training programmes, income enhancement programmes, including entrepreneurship and small-scale industries,” he said in his opening remarks at the 18th Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting here yesterday.

Taib added more affordable housing for these targeted groups needed to be built. “I urge the people to continue to work together in helping to eradicate poverty.”

Touching on rural transformation through the Rural Transformation Project (RTP), he said Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg had always been concerned about the needs of the people, especially those in the rural areas.

“Various high impact and people-centric projects have been approved and are being implemented to meet the needs of the people.

“Under the State Budget in 2019, a total of RM9.076bil has been approved for development purposes, particularly in rural areas.

“This is the highest annual development budget in Sarawak’s history,” he said.

Taib added he was pleased  that the state government was implementing the RTP and the People’s Project, which emphasised on infrastructure, utilities and communications in the rural areas.

“I urge all government agencies to ensure that these projects are implemented and completed on schedule for the benefit of the people.”
