KUCHING: Although the rabies situation at the popular Reservoir Park here has been contained, this does not mean that the area is free from stray dogs.

Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) Mayor Datuk Abang Abdul Wahap Abang Julai told the media that there are still several traps in the recreational park, which was reopened to the public last Saturday.

“The traps are still there because we are afraid that there may be other strays and since we cannot be on guard for 24 hours there.

“I would like to advise the public to always be alert and help report to us if they see any strays in the park,” the mayor said after an assembly at the DBKU headquarters, Bukit Siol, Jalan Semariang near
here yesterday.

He also advised the public against releasing any trapped dogs.

“There was an incident whereby a stray was trapped but was later released by someone.”

“We pity these animals but human lives are far more precious, therefore, we have to ensure that all strays are taken in and they will be tested for rabies,” stressed Abdul Wahap.
