BINTULU: Longhouse folk in Kakus have been reminded to limit their movements during the coming Gawai Dayak celebration to curb the spread of Covid-19.

Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department (Native Laws and Customs) Datuk John Sikie Tayai issued this reminder on Sunday (May 23) after presenting Minor Rural Project (MRP) grants worth RM85,000 to five village development and security committees (JKKKs) in the Kakus state constituency.

He emphasised that it was crucial for longhouse folk here to adhere to the standard operating procedures (SOPs) issued by the government for their safety.

The handing over of the MRP grants took place at the Kakus (N60) Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) service centre.

“Gawai Dayak is coming and I would like to advise all of you to adhere the SOPs. We are only allowed to welcome the festival among family members who live in the same room or “bilik”.  We can’t go to other rooms even in the same longhouse,” explained Sikie.

“These SOPs also apply to those living in the urban areas.

“Celebrants are only allowed to celebrate within their households,” he said.

Sikie applauded the initiative made by villagers from Rumah Mat Sampei at Sungai Separai, Tatau to use ropes to partition the ‘ruai’ (verandah) in the longhouse in view of the coming Gawai Dayak celebration.
