KUCHING: Sarawakians have been advised against lowering their guard in fight against Covid-19.

The federal government can declare the conditional movement control order (CMCO) and the state can introduce the standard operating procedures (SOPs) to be followed by businesses and industries.

However, every Sarawakian has a role to play in moving forward, said Kuching South City Council (MBKS) in a statement yesterday.

“Until there is a vaccine for Covid-19, all Sarawakians need to take all necessary precautions to protect our health and safeguard our livelihood.

“The CMCO period from May 12 is not a licence to lower our guard in our fight against the highly infectious and deadly Covid-19,” it added.

MBKS said the CMCO was merely to allow the people to earn a living while continuing the practices that had been adopted during the MCO.

On May 10, the PM had announced that the CMCO is extended to June 9. He had also announced that the economy will gradually be opening up on May 4.

The state government had on May 9 announced that various segments of the economic sectors of the state will be allowed to operate from May 12 and introduced Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for businesses and industries.

MBKS said many who were confused by all these announcements hence it issued the statement.

The city council said the CMCO was extended to June 9 because the War Against Covid-19 was not over.

“So, Sarawakians will need to continue all the measures that we have taken to safeguard ourselves since the declaration of the MCO in mid-March. It means we need to avoid crowded places, maintain social distancing, put on our masks, maintain hygiene, etc.

“Notwithstanding the above, a conditional MCO was declared on the May 4 because the federal government realised the economic impact of the MCO on the Malaysian people, businesses and also the government. Put simply, while we need to safeguard our health, we also need to make a living,” it added.

MBKS said in so many countries, where the lockdown conditions were lifted, there were new waves of Covid-19 and clusters.

“So, please do not let your guard down in the war against Covid-19. Adopt all the MCO practices and comply with the SOPs. Together, we can win the war against Covid-19. I pray for the safety and prosperity of all Sarawakians,” it said.
