MIRI: Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas hopes the Land Code (Amendment) Ordinance 2018 forum will enlighten community leaders, and Sarawakians in general, on issues pertaining to their rights, including native customary rights (NCR).

He cautioned the Opposition not to mislead the people about the Land Code (Section 6 and Section 18). He said land gazetted under Section 6 does not make the land up for grabs. “Please get the facts right, do not politicise land issues.”

“I hope the forum will be able to clear up your understanding on this matter (Land Code (Amendment) Ordinance 2018) and disseminate the correct facts on Pemakai Menoa (territorial domain) and Pulau Galau (communal reserve) to their respective grassroots,” Uggah pointed out.

He added that Sarawakians must understand and know what Section 6 and Section 18 are under the Land Code.

Until July this year, a total of 888,767 hectares of land have been surveyed under Section 6 and 724,923 hectares gazetted as native communal reserves (for agriculture), while 34,958 hectares had been surveyed under Section 18.

Land surveyed under Section 18 cannot be sold to non-Bumiputera while under Section 6, it verifies the
status of the NCR land as communal reserve for the landowners.
