KUCHING: Tang Soo Do practitioners have been reminded not to misuse the Korean martial art for bullying.

Stampin Member of Parliament Chong Chieng Jen said that as individuals gain strength and proficiency in various forms of martial arts, they must refrain from misusing their skills and instead protect those who are less capable.

“Martial arts is a good form of exercise, and at the same time, it also gives you confidence in self-defence.

“But it is also important to remember that great powers come with great responsibility. As you become stronger and attain more skills in Tang Soo Do, it also means that you have greater responsibility,” he said.

He said this when officiating at the two-day Tang Soo Do Samarahan 4th Championship Open held at Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina (SJKC) Chung Hua 4 1/2 here today (Aug 25).

Chong delivers his speech.

Elaborating, Chong said he used to learn Tang Soo Do as well, and hence he reminded the practitioners to uphold the five values of the martial art, among which are self-control and doing no harm to others.

“This is one of the great values inculcated in Tang Soo Do; therefore, don’t engage in bullying activities,” he said.

Chong, who stopped learning Tang Soo Do after obtaining the Yellow Belt, has also encouraged new learners not to give up and to persist in their practice.

“Today, I see many eager faces, but remember, like in all competitions, some will win and some will lose, so don’t be disappointed but be grateful.

“Most importantly, through this participation, you can create friendships, hone your skills, and get more adapted to more complex situations in the future,” he said.

Meanwhile, the competition, held from Aug 26 to 27, is organised by the Tang Soo Do Association of Samarahan Division.

The competition involved about 147 primary and secondary students from 30 schools around Kuching, Samarahan, and Sibu.

Spanning ages 7 to 21, the best contenders will be selected to represent the national championship in Selangor, scheduled for Dec 16 to 17.

Tang Soo Do Malaysia Association second vice president Master Kiu Chiong Inn; Tang Soo Do Association of Kota Samarahan Division advisor Master Peter Wong; and Tang Soo Do Association of Kota Samarahan Division president Roger Sim were among those present.
