KUCHING: In modern times, social media usage is prevalent in the community, bringing rise to the issues of oversharing and the invasion of privacy. This can be particularly dangerous in situations where parents share too much information about their children on their social media accounts.

“Times are different now – in previous times we only had our diaries, which we were secretive about. Nowadays, people want to publicise everything!” remarked Sarawak Health Department director Dr Jamilah Hashim.

“If we overshare, for example divulging where their children go to school and places the frequently visit, this could be dangerous for the child,” she said.

“It is even worse if well-off people show their economic status by proudly displaying their branded goods or expensive cars and homes. Ill-meaning viewers might try to kidnap the child in order to gain ransom money from the family,” Dr Jamilah further elaborated.

Dr Jamilah emphasised that the public should be careful with what they publish on social media. She also noted how easy it is to spread a photo through social media, which adds to the danger as well.

“We can share photos, but we have to be careful about the details we reveal.”
