KUCHING: The Federation of Chinese Associations of Kuching, Samarahan and Serian Divisions president has an advice to those celebrating Chinese New Year – celebrate within your means.

Datuk Richard Wee said as an annual celebration of the Chinese community, CNY should continue to be celebrated without overdoing it.

“The Chinese should learn to celebrate within their means and not over do it.

“This year, the economic outlook is less optimistic, I would suggest when you celebrate, spend only on what is necessary. Just don’t overspend,” he said when contacted yesterday.

Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) commissioner Datuk Wee Hong Seng said he is confident most members of the community are “very thrifty”.

“They don’t just spend anyhow. I think the Chinese always spend wisely.

“Of course, that must be our practice. In fact, it is a culture that has been passed down from our forefathers.

“We have always been advised to save for rainy days and if you cannot make extra money, just don’t spend,” he said.

Wee, who is a member of Kuching Hokkien Association, said business is less brisk nowadays.

“You can see that the traffic jams are not that serious compared to previous years and shopping malls look a bit quieter, so I think that is how the economy is at the moment.

“My wish is that the government of this country will argue less and give priority to policies that benefit the people,” he said.
