BINTULU: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has advised residents not to be alarmed if they hear a warning siren tomorrow (Apr 30).

The siren is part of a scheduled test of the Tsunami Early Warning System (SAATNM) at the Marine Police Headquarters here, which will occur between 10.30 am and 12.30 pm.

“Residents in the surrounding areas are advised not to panic by the siren sound as this is only a test,” said MetMalaysia in a statement.

The department also confirmed it would notify the public of any changes to the planned test.

SAATNM, managed by the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation, is designed to provide timely warnings to residents in case of a potential tsunami. The system detects regional earthquakes and assesses whether they could trigger a tsunami affecting the country.
