KUCHING: Fake degrees have hogged the news of late after it was disclosed that a deputy minister’s educational background came under scrutiny for using the name of a prestigious British university when in fact his institution is an international university in the United States of America.

Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Jemut Masing said possessing fake degrees is a serious matter especially when it concerns members of parliament, more so those holding ministerial positions.

“If he or she lies on the matter, how do we know if he or she won’t lie again in the future?” he said.

“The question of resignation does not lie with the Prime Minister as it is a matter of personal integrity and conscience. The person concerned should make the decision instead of passing the ball to the Prime Minister.”

Deputy Foreign Minister Marzuki Yahya, who was found to have a dubious degree, said he would let the Prime Minister decide his fate.

Malaysians have questioned Marzuki’s credibility after it was found that the Cambridge International University where he got his degree from is not accredited by any US education authority.

Following the discovery of the fake certificate, several Pakatan Harapan (PH) leaders are also alleged to have dubious education certificates.
