KUCHING: The Sarawak Bumiputera Teachers Union (KGBS) strongly opposed the proposal to temporarily abolish the school term holidays.

KGBS president Ahmad Malie pointed out that students needed the holidays for their mental rest and psychological welfare.

“The students may seem relaxed during the home-based teaching and learning (PdPR) but they are actually stressed.

“Meanwhile, the teachers had to exert more energy to make PdPR a success,” he said in his statement.

“The holidays will help those involved to reduce their stress level. The mental fatigue and tiredness experienced by the students is not the same as the fatigue we experience on a non-stop road trip.”

Ahmad said abolishing the school term holidays would make students lose focus on learning.

“The school term holidays must commence as scheduled by the Ministry of Education (MOE). MOE should not succumb to pressures from netizens who think that term leave in this Covid-19 situation is insignificant,” he added.

“KGBS hopes that the MOE will continue to take into account the welfare of the students and teachers before making a decision on the abolition of school term holidays.

“We are ready to participate if there is a syndication session on the issue of abolishing the school term holidays,” Ahmad said.
