BINTULU: People should not take the Covid-19 situation in Sarawak lightly although some of the standard operating procedures (SOP) have been relaxed, said Member of Parliament for Bintulu, Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing.

Tiong who tested positive for the virus on Feb 20, said he had experienced uncomfortable symptoms but was glad that with good medical care, he was able to return to his normal life.

“But then, I have a mixed feeling. Although I am happy that I have been cured, I am worried about the Covid-19 situation in Bintulu, as 82 cases were recorded today, mostly from social activities including dinners, barbeques and others.

“Nowadays, people seem to be ignorant of the transmission of Covid-19 compared to when it started in Malaysia two years ago,” he said in his Facebook post, on Wednesday.

Tiong added that there are some people who just turned a blind eye to the SOPs.

“So I hope that we don’t take the situation lightly because Covid-19 is real. Although the symptoms for those who had their booster jab are not as bad as those who have yet to received it, one should be really vigilant because not everyone has the same fate,” he stressed.

He said data provided by the Ministry of Health should not be neglected especially on cases of virus deaths.

“Cases of children infected by Covid-19 also increased by 160 per cent in a week and sadly, we had a case of a 10-year-old girl who died because of Covid-19 in Sibu,” he said.
