Down memory lane for Wings’ fans

Malaysia’s iconic rock legend, Awie leads the night, singing for the audience.

KUCHING: It was back to the 90s for 700 spectators and die-hard fans of Wings, Malaysia’s number one rock band when the five-man band made an appearance bringing back nostalgic memories last Saturday night.

Datuk Ahmad Azhar Othman, Malaysia’s iconic rock legend also known as ‘Awie’, led the night to entertain the audience from their different albums, tracing back to their first album in 1987.

The one-night event held at the Sarawak Chamber Ballroom, Riverside Majestic Hotel lasted for over 90 minutes and fans were not disappointed as it brought back some of the rock era ballads.

Awie, the vocalist; Syam and Edrie, the guitarists; Eddie, the bassist and Black the drummer are the current members of the band which entertained and brought nostalgia to the rock genre. 

The entire atmosphere was electric, vibrant and Wings brought a whole other level of energy into the room. 

Guests were seated in a group of 10 per dining table where they could enjoy food and drinks while enjoying the performance at the same time.

Awie brought the audience back to a place of youth – reminiscing the time when Wings’ music helped young people to navigate through with the different seasons of life,

Some of the songs sang were – Opera Hidup, Romania, Jumpa Hilang , Biarkan Berlalu, Ingatkan Dia, Hukum Karma, Bernafas Dalam Lumpur, Bujang Senang, Sayap Ilusi, Peronda Jaket Biru, Taman Rashidah Utama, Harapan, Sejati and Gemuruh and Awang Trasher.

“It’s been a long time since we last came to Sarawak, your presence proves that Wings is still relevant”, Awie passionately stirred the crowd at the venue.

Zame Hadni, a member of the Wings Society Kuching, beamed with joy and said that he was incredibly happy to be part of the night to witness the legendary Wings performed. 

“Full of support if there is to be another one held in the future, the songs were nostalgic and it brought back many memories from the past”,  Hadni said with a smile.

Awie, when met by the media later, took time to thank the organiser, BMS for working hard despite facing several challenges leading up to the one-night event.

“I hope through this opportunity, Wings coming to Sarawak will open doors for other bands to come and other bands in Sarawak will be able to go to West Malaysia,” he said. .

Wings will be on the international stage in F1 Singapore, on Sept 30, at the Marina Bay Street Circuit at 6 pm.

Several international artists will be performing, for instance, American band Greenday, American electronic dance music star, Marshmallow and another popular American pop group Black Eyed Peas.

“We are the first Southeast Asian artistes that will be on the international F1 stage, our 37 years’ journey is acknowledged in Singapore,” said Awie.

The F1 concerts have hosted some of Singapore’s largest concerts over the years, with crowds of up to 65,000 people.

“Singing requires a lot of practice, my health is not in peak condition, and the doctors have asked us to rest, but how can I rest, I have to continue on, the Wings’ journey, our assignment is not complete, we must continue for Malaysia”, he added.

The concept of a ‘Rock and Dine’, was introduced by Wings where guests and audiences may sit and eat but also be entertained by ock music.

“The concept has been very successful, caters exclusively for those supporting Wings for more than a decade, who are owners of companies, general managers and prefer exclusivity. For now, it is a suitable trend,” he said.

Awie was also asked when a film would be released with the Wings members in it, he said plans are still in place but it will not be anytime soon.

The event was organised by BMS Event Sdn Bhd in collaboration with National Cancer Society Malaysia Sarawak Branch.

Present were the BMS Event representatives and DAL HCM Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Datuk Dzulkarnaen Ahmad as well as event director Bidari Mohamad Suhaili.
