SIBU: Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development Dr Annuar Rapa has approved RM57,000 to help almost 1,000 students master reading and arithmetic in Nangka.

The Nangka assemblyman said the Year 2 and 3 students from nine schools in his area were having problem in catching up on their studies.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has affected our kids’ education. In my constituency I have received reports from the headmasters that almost 1,000 students in the schools are facing this problem.

“Hence, I have discussed with the headmasters on ways to help the students to improve their mastery in reading and arithmetic to the appropriate level,” he said in his speech during the presentation of Yayasan Sarawak Uniform Aid yesterday.

Dr Annuar said the RM57,000 aid was to help the students to get tuition and assist teachers to buy teaching material such as books.

“If the problem of these students is not dealt with immediately, they will continue to fall behind because they are very weak in all subjects due to not being able to master the level of reading and counting.

“Therefore, I approved the allocation for that purpose for which I will issue the cheque today,” said.

He also said that the headmasters had requested for Smart Television for their schools.

“I understand that the need for smart TVs is very urgent as they can be used in a variety of ways by teachers to teach our students.

“Hence, I have approved (Smart TVs) in stages, similar to what I have implemented in every school in the past five years where the chairs and desks for all primary schools in Nangka constituency have been changed to modern and comfortable ones.

“As a start I will allocate two Smart TVs to each school, eventually in two or three years’ time every class in Nangka c schools will have a Smart TV each,” he said.

Also present were political secretary to the Premier Sayed Azmee Wan Junaidi and Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Bawang Assan chairman Romeo Christopher Tegong.
