KUCHING: Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) president Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian is confident that the party will be led by a woman in the future so as to embrace equity.

Women, he said, should be given opportunities  in all aspects as their equal participation and leadership be it in political and other professions are crucial in developing Sarawak.

He said women are capable of many things, be it at the workplace, nation-building, or decision-making. Besides, many of them have to juggle work and family.

“Women are talented and definitely have the qualities to become leaders.

“Hence, I hope that one day, SUPP will be led by a woman. I hope to see (a woman party president) before I die,” he added.

The Deputy Premier was speaking at the International Women’s Day gathering with Southern Zones SUPP Women held at the party headquarters in Jalan Ong Kee Hui here last night (March 24).

Elaborating, he said education is the key to equal opportunities; therefore, women are better off today as they have an equal chance at education, especially in Sarawak.

“As we recognise and appreciate their contributions and their capabilities, women are now better represented at all levels and fields, both in the public and private sectors in Sarawak.

“It is just a matter of time for women to lead Sarawak,” he said.

Dr Sim said that since 1959, not only 50 per cent of the party members are women, but they are multi-racial and have been at the forefront of SUPP political struggles despite being mothers, grandmothers, or having to work full time.

“Thank you for your dedication and sacrifices. We are looking forward to having young female members take over leadership and be party president, as we are ready to embrace equity,” he said.

Also present were SUPP Women chief Kho Teck Wan, Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng, and Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang.
