KUCHING: Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii has been appointed chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) on Health, Science & Innovation.
In a Facebook post, the Democratic Action Party (DAP) MP said he was honoured to be entrusted with his new responsibility and thanked fellow MPs for their support.
“I believe due to the pandemic, this committee plays a pivotal role in providing input and check and balance towards the government’s approach on Covid-19 as well as acts as a uniting point to mobilise all sectors for the good of the country.
“Our main agenda is to provide inputs on Covid-19 approaches taken by the government, scrutinise their effectiveness and also plan strategies to deal with the pandemic as well as other ongoing health issues.”
Dr Yii revealed that the committee would hold a meeting with the Health Ministry and the Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry.
“We will be briefed on the National Vaccination Strategy and also the government’s approach in handling Covid-19, including its plans during this emergency.
“The safety, efficiency and distribution of Covid-19 vaccine is also our priority to make sure the government is transparent in the whole process from procurement, training, education and distribution,” he said.
The MP said the committee would scrutinise the National Vaccination Strategy and seek inputs from experts to make sure it reaches its intended target.
“One of the efforts we hope to achieve is to mobilise all sectors including the private sector, non-government organisations (NGOs) and relevant stakeholders through this PSC.
“This is to gather their input on the country’s strategy in order to activate a ‘whole of society’ approach against this common enemy,” he said.
He pointed out that the PSC’s ultimate goal was to contribute to necessary reforms and policy direction including long-term reforms and roadmaps in terms of healthcare and innovation for the benefit of the country.
