KUCHING: Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) is hoping that works to improve and upgrade the drainage of flood-prone areas in Samarahan will be done soonest possible.

The Public Works Department (PWD) is looking into the matter seriously, said MPKS chairman Datuk Peter Minos who added that the affected villages and areas included Kampung Tanjung Budong, Jalan Datuk Mohd Musa between Bukit Berangan and Kampung Merdang Lumut and parts of Taman Samarindah among others.

“The recent flooding was very serious as the water level was recorded up to five feet high which caused a lot of damages and inconvenience to the affected residents. The worst was in Taman Univista and we pity the residents because they were under enhanced movement control order (EMCO).

“MPKS wants the drainage improvement and upgrading to be undertaken soonest after the technical parts and funding are sorted out. The other areas affected by the recent floods are not forgotten but we want to handle the most serious ones first,” he said.

Minos also said the local council is pleased with the PWD that has been said to be very proactive and keen to help out.

“We put trust in PWD to do the job as they are in-charge of the drainage system and protocols road on the Kuching-Samarahan expressway.

“As the agency that is responsible to serve the people affected by the problems, MPKS is taking the comments and criticisms from the public with an open heart. I advise the public to exercise patience and understanding because we are doing our best to solve the problems at hand,” he added.
