MIRI: An oil palm fruit truck driver who was involved in a rear-end collision didn’t think anything of it and proceeded with his journey.

However, not long after that the 43-year old driver spotted smoke coming out of the engine compartment, forcing him to pull over by the roadside.

No sooner had he stopped than the truck burst into flames. The front part was badly damaged.

The incident occurred at 8.20pm yesterday (Nov 9) along the Miri-Bintulu road.

Zone 6 Miri Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) acting chief Ahmad Nizam Sapaiee said the driver was fortunate to have escaped injuries.

He said the truck was heading towards Bintulu from Miri city when the incident happened.

“The fire was put out by a Bomba team from the Lopeng fire station. The firefighters were at that time on their way towards SMK Bakong and SK Beluru Sentral for a fire drill and demonstration session,” he said.

Added Nizam: “Prior to the incident, the driver claimed that he was involved in a minor rear-end crash with a car. Both of them did not stop after the accident but proceeded with their journey.

“After a while, the truck driver realised his truck emitting dense smoke and immediately stopped the vehicle.

“It was then the vehicle burst into flames.”
