BAU: A driver died following a road accident at KM1, Jalan Bau – Serikin, near here, yesterday.

Edmund Teo Kho Chiew, 41, from Kampung Sungai Pinang Siniawan was pronounced dead at about 8.30am while being treated at Sarawak General Hospital (SGH).

State Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief Supt Alexson Naga Chabu said initial investigation indicated that Edmund was heading to Bau from Serikin when his sport utility vehicle (SUV) went out of control, entered the opposite lane and collided head-on with an oncoming sedan car at around 2.30am.

He added that the 54-year-old sedan car driver was returning home to Krokong.

“Due to the collision the sedan car went up in flames. Both drivers managed to get out of their respective vehicles. However, Edmund who fractured his chin bone and had a blood clot in his head fell unconscious after that.

“The other driver dislocated his left shoulder and injured his knees. He received six stitches on the knees,” Chabu said when contacted yesterday.

He added both victims were rushed to Bau Hospital. Edmund was referred to SGH where he succumbed to his injuries.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Meanwhile, a spokesman of the state Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said firefighters from the Bau fire station were immediately deployed to the scene after the department received a distress call at 2.53am.

The fire that engulfed the sedan car was already at its peak when the firefighters arrived, he added.

The firefighters then quickly doused the fire and attended to the victims. The sedan car was destroyed by the fire.

The operation ended at 3.30am.
