MIRI: A roadshow will held to create greater awareness of the need for permits to operate drones for commercial, professional and recreational purposes.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) agreed to the idea mooted by state Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin during a meeting with CAAM Chief Executive Officer, Dato’ Captain Norazman Mahmud and senior officers.

A briefing was given specifically on the subject of operation of drones or unmanned aircraft which require licensing and permits.

Lee proposed that a roadshow be conducted by CAAM with the assistance of the ministry to brief the public, many of whom are unaware, on the procedures and regulatory requirements .

Recently, there have been a number of cases of drones used in recording festivals and events being seized by the police for not having the necessary approval and permit.

The meeting also dwelled on aviation operation procedures and regulatory requirements in connection with the proposed acquisition of MASwings by the Sarawak government.

On the same day, Lee’s delegation visited CAE Kuala Lumpur Sdn Bhd in Sepang, Selangor, a training centre for airline pilots, engineers, cabin crew and ground crew.

The purpose of the visit was to gain a comprehensive understanding of the aviation training industry and explore collaboration opportunities.

The delegation received a comprehensive briefing from CAE Kuala Lumpur Area General Manager, Kevin Foo and his management team on the operations and training services provided by CAE.

The delegation also toured the training facilities including the flight simulators.

Lee was accompanied by Datuk Dr Jerip Susil, Deputy Minister of Transport Sarawak (Aviation and Road); Dato Alice Jawan Empaling, Permanent Secretary to the Ministry; Sio Yew Hua, Aviation Technical Adviser for the ministry; and other senior officers.
