KUCHING: A couple faces the possibility of being canned up to nine lashes and not more than five years’ jail each if convicted for drug possession.
If convicted under Section 39A (1), the suspects can be sentenced to a jail term up to five years and whipping up to nine lashes.
They were arrested for possessing 5.16g of drugs believed to be methamphetamine, or known locally as Syabu, in a rented room at MJC, Batu Kawa.
Padawan deputy police chief DSP Lim Jaw Shyong said the arrests were made by Padawan narcotics police around 10am on Friday (June 18).
“The team found a medium sized plastic packet containing 10 small plastic packets inside a black bag.
“Each packet had crystalline lumps suspected to be Syabu inside. They weighed around 5.16g and are worth RM400,” he said.
Both suspects, aged 40, were brought to the police station, where they were found positive for drugs.
Lim said the suspects are now remanded to facilitate investigation under Section 39A (1) and Section 15 (1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and could be jailed and whipped upon conviction.
