KUCHING: A couple who fled from the police was arrested at Matang after their stolen car hit a lamp post at about 1.15am yesterday.

The suspects – a 53-year-old man from Kpg Sungai Duuh, Mile 17, Kuching-Serian Road and a 33-year-old woman from Jalan Matang – were acting suspiciously in the car when patrolling police were on their rounds at Rubber Road West.

The male suspect who was driving refused to stop when told to by the police. Instead, he sped off.

Police then called for back-up and chased them from Green Road to Matang where the couple’s car went out of control and hit a lamp post.

The couple who was not injured claimed that the car belonged to their friends but could not furnish the friends’ personal details. The car plate number was also not the original one.

The police eventually found that the car was stolen from a technician in Desa Wira last April 3.

Further checks revealed that the male suspect was out on bail and has a history of drug peddling. The female was tested and found to be drug positive.

Both of them were detained for further questioning.

The case was confirmed by Padawan police chief Superintendent Aidil Bolhassan.
