DUN organises three fishing competitions

KUCHING: Three fishing competitions will be organised in September and October in conjunction with the 150th Anniversary of the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly this year.

The competitions are: Lake Fishing to be held at the Pustaka Negeri Sarawak in Petra Jaya on Sept 29; Deep-sea Fishing and Shore Fishing (Jetty Fishing) to be held in Mukah from Oct 6-7.

Assistant Minister for Agriculture, Dr Abdul Rahman Ismail who is also the organising chairman, said at a press conference yesterday the competitions are opened to Malaysian citizens.

The Deep-sea Fishing competition to be held in Mukah from Oct 6-7 will be limited to 200 participants while the Shore Fishing or Jetty Fishing is limited to 100 participants.

Meanwhile, the Lake Fishing Competition at Pustaka Negeri Sarawak, Kuching is expected to attract some 1,000 participants.

For Deep-sea Fishing, the first prize is RM8, 888, second prize, RM5,555 and third prize, RM3,333. Fourth to tenth placings will receive consolation prizes of RM222 each.

For the Shore or Betty Fishing, first prize is RM1,555, second prize, RM1,111 and third prize, RM555. Fourth to tenth consolation prizes will receive RM111 each.

For the Lake Fishing category, the first prize is RM3,000, second prize, RM2,000 and third prize, RM1,000. There will also be 50 consolation prizes of RM100 each.

The participation fee for the Deep-sea Fishing is RM200, for the Jetty Fishing and Lake Fishing it is RM20 and on first come, first serve basis.

Dr Abdul Rahman said the competition is being organised together with other agencies and the main objective is to develop camaraderie with the rakyat and to bring the State Legislative Assembly closer to the community.

During the two-day event in Mukah, there will also be other side programmes and activities.

The event in Mukah will be officiated by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg while the Lake Fishing Competiton at the Pustaka Negeri Sarawak will be officiated by the Speaker of Sarawak State Legislative Assembly.
