KOTA SAMARAHAN: A 56-year-old local man and a foreign woman, who started a fire in a locked room at Taman Desa Ilmu, have been arrested for their alleged involvement in several burglary cases around Kota Samarahan.

On Tuesday, a distress call was received by the State Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) at 4.50pm by a member of a public who witnessed smoke billowing out of the commercial shoplot.

It was learnt that the duo had apparently set boxes on fire at the entrance of their bedroom unit and locked themselves in the room.

Kota Samarahan district acting police chief ASP Rafhan Kepli confirmed that the identity of the duo from the confiscated items believed to be from the burglary activities.

“They were arrested and the male suspect is believed to be involved in burglary cases around Kota Samarahan.

“Some homeowners will be called in to identify the items and assist in the investigation,” he said.

The male suspect was arrested in connection with the burglary of a beauty shop in Desa Ilmu and the case is being investigated under Section 457 of the Penal Code.

Rafhan added that the female suspect was found to have overstayed in the country and the case was being investigated under Section 15 (1) (c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.
